To write is to give something of yourself to the world. Why?
Your characters reveal something of your tastes and/or attitudes, even if they are things you hate. Scary thought? Perhaps. It should be a complimentary one though. After all characters should be based on what you know of life, relationships, motivations and so on. You’ve got to have some knowledge of what makes people tick to be able to invent your own! Of course the great thing about being a writer is you can choose exactly what you want to reveal. While psychoanalysts would still work out what you’re trying to hide thankfully most readers don’t fall into that category.
Characters are the writer’s backbone
That drive the plot along
Get them right, together or alone
Whether your story is short or long.
Trying to answer the character versus plot debate to me seems pointless as no story is complete without either of them. Both have got to be strong. Both have got to suit each other (it is possible to have a good character in the wrong plot). You also want your works to be remembered for great characters and plots. Both have to be fleshed out properly.
