At the end of each year I review how I did. Inevitably some targets I achieved, others I didn't and the rest are generally "in progress" (where I would like my writing to be at is one of those goals where I expect said goalposts to move. Last year I had more acceptances in print than ever before, which is wonderful, but I'd obviously like to do better in 2016).
I also set smaller targets during the year - for example, by the end of February I want to have submitted short stories to all of my regular online markets (and hopefully for them to have accepted said stories). I've also listed a couple of competitions I'd like to try.
I find setting targets like this very useful in that they keep me on track, I have something to aim for (specifically and generally) and it is a nice feeling at the end of the year when I can tick at least some of the things off my list!
