- Do you know your characters inside out? If someone were to ask you questions about them, could you answer them because you've anticipated questions and worked out an answer or you know them well enough to know how they would react even in the question isn't one you could anticipate.
- Can you identify your characters' virtues and flaws? In the case of villains, what makes them act they do? In the case of "goodies", what are their failings? How have either villains or goodies come to be what they are?
- Do you like writing/talking about your characters? If you do, it's a good sign as, all being well and given how long it can take to get published, you'll live with those characters for a long time. Even if you decide to self-publish, you need to like your characters enough to want to promote them and their story.
