- You are going along minding your own business when you come to a village that has clearly had a dragon visitation and the smoke is still visible.
- When people are fleeing in the opposite direction to the one you're going in. Watch out - the dragon (or other monster) is likely to be about.
- All your spells go wrong and nothing gets turned into what you planned. This is particularly bad news for a witch or wizard. Failure to "perform" rarely goes down well with your colleagues.
- You're a wicked stepmother and angry dwarves are chasing you. This is so humiliating, especially when you realise they are keeping up with you.
- The talking animals you come across make more sense than any humanoid creature you've met. This is not good.
- A talking animal makes it clear what it thinks of you and the verdict is not favourable.
- You come home from a nice walk in the woods with your family to discover your home wrecked, your breakfast all over the place and some vandal of a girl is making good her escape through the window. You wonder what you've done to deserve this. Nobody will tell you. They don't know.
- Various people give you information you need to know before going on a quest. At this point, you had no idea you were going on one but by the time Person 8 has told you something useful in this regard, any other plans you had for the next few months, you may as well scrap. In this world, fighting fate is at best a waste of time and at worst going to land you in something far worse than the original intention.
- You wake up to discover a significant amount of your gingerbread cottage has been scoffed by two kids who clearly have not heard of the word "restraint".
- You were one of those who'd taunted the Ugly Duckling only to be confronted by the fact he is now a beautiful swan. As well as the humilation of being totally and utterly wrong, you realise swans are powerful birds and more than capable of inflicting injury. Time to make a decent apology/retreat then.
