But, of course, all fiction matters. Fiction is a great way of getting a message across without preaching. You can show your audience what you are getting at rather than telling them. Being able to identify with a character can help develop empathy and sympathy for others. It may even wake some people up to the fact that, hey, there are real people with problems not dissimilar to this. (I think the opening to the Pixar film Up also does this).
Fiction contains truth. It packages it within a story. Sometimes the harder elements of life are more palatable to take this way. And never despise escapism. Stories that "just" entertain are helping to relieve pressure by enabling people to relax with a good book. Writing fiction is a very positive thing to do - so good luck with your writing.
