When I find what I thought was going to be a short story turns out to be long enough to be a novel (though that has its plus side. It means I've got another book!). When reading other short stories, getting so engrossed in that author's work, you kind of resent it when the story stops.
Flash Fiction...
An enjoyable challenge but I find these harder to do than ordinary short stories. Less does not mean more!
Short Stories being undervalued...
I've heard the "oh it's just a short story" comment in my time and resent the "just". Almost certainly the speaker has no attempt whatsoever to write any otherwise they wouldn't say it.
Markets for short stories (particularly print) disappearing rapidly...
I'm really pleased there's a healthy demand for short stories on line (hello Alfie Dog Fiction, Cafe Lit and Shortbread Short Stories!) but I would like to see more quirky print magazines taking on more quirky stories and these getting good support. The readers for short stories are out there... It can't just be me who wants more print options?
