- Short stories depict a moment in time, a snapshot as it were and are perfect reading for those without much time to read.
- Short stories can vary in length from 6 words (see Ernest Hemingway's famous 6 words story) to several thousand words (though the average is around 1500 to 2000).
- Short stories can convey a whole range of moods and genres.
- Publication opportunities are via competitions (there are loads for short stories) to anthologies (check out credentials of those behind them first and, if in doubt, seek advice elsewhere before committing to anything).
- There is a good market for online short story publication.
- Publication credits for short stories can make a great addition to your writing CV and help prove you are building up an audience/platform.
- Short stories are wonderful for sharpening writing skills as you've got to think of the word count and keep your writing tight. This is particularly true for flash fiction.
- Short stories can be a way of helping you keep work out there while you work on a longer project.
- Short stories are a joy to write. I love coming up with one moment in time and making my tale focus on it.
- In writing short stories, you're following a fine tradition which began with the oral storytellers. (Much easier to relate a short story than a novel by word of mouth alone though, in fairness, the oral tradition is also responsible for the saga).
