Prepare yourself for the needed rewrite
After rewrite until you really know
There’s no more you can tell or, better, show
Your plot and characters have taken flight!
I need at least two “goes” at a short story (first draft then rewrite, and often more than one). I need at least three goes at a novel (first draft, copy typing and basic edit, then full edit, then usually I edit again to make sure the story does make sense). What matters is not how often you have to rewrite but getting your story right. As experience in writing develops, hopefully you can do the rewrites in fewer goes. All I know is nobody writes a story of any kind that’s perfect immediately.
To write is often divine
Or maddening when the right line
Seems to struggle to come out
And words must be mixed about.
Mind, mixing words about can be huge fun. I think the difference is if you are planning to mix words as opposed to being kind of forced to do so as you know the story just isn’t reading or flowing correctly. Switching off your inner editor whilst writing is crucial. I always tell myself my story does not have to be perfect immediately, I can and will edit it later and when writing the first draft I just let the creative side go.
