- When writing a new world into existence, think of all levels of your society. Think of where the clashes will be. That's where your stories will be.
- Waving a magic wand should never in itself be the answer to problems. It should be an aid, a way of rescuing people but your magical community should all have magical abilities so your characters should have to find ways other than magic to overcome difficulties. That will make for more interesting stories.
- Does using magic drain your practitioners, giving them another reason to limit their use of it to those times when they've got to use magic to get themselves out of danger?
- When waving a magic wand, get your characters to keep their spells short and sweet otherwise they will find themselves obliterated long before they get to the second verse!
- When fighting dragons, get your hero(ines) to have fire extinguishers on standby. It's a useful way of dealing with the flames! Also get your people wearing fire-proof gear. The existence of magic should not exclude the use of common sense.
