- Write longhand or direct to PC? I do both! I always write novels long hand first and use the typing up as my first edit. I write short stories directly to PC.
- Writing Retreats or Day Conferences? I've not yet had the chance to go on a writing retreat (though would love to do so one day) but can highly recommend day conferences as a great way of meeting other writers, learning a lot from the talks and workshops as well as through the conversations you have with your fellow delegates.
- How-to-write books or specific course? I have been on specific courses (often as part of an overall day conference which is focussing, say, on website creation and using social media). But I also love how-to-write books. I can't recommend Stephen King's On Writing highly enough but I also love Robert Mckee's Story and Christopher Booker's The Seven Basic Plots.
- When creating worlds, what do you focus on? The setting or the characters? I start with the characters (this can dictate the kind of world they must belong to) because without well depicted characters, there is no story and without that the setting is kind of irrelevant! The wonders of Middle Earth would have been nothing without the hobbits to populate them.
- You've got the characters. You're building the setting. What do you focus on - the physical description or the way the world is run? I focus on the latter as it helps bring the world and characters to life. I find I then fill in the physical description as and when I need to do so. I usually find a brief description every now and then is enough.
