- Robin Hood. Love the legends. Am inclined to believe he might have been based on a real person but cannot prove this. The idea of someone from the upper ranks caring for those below them in the social scale I admire a lot.
- Death (Discworld). Compassionate but always shown as a true professional. My favourite story here is Reaper Man.
- Jeeves. Yes, I love Bertie Wooster too but frankly the story wouldn't exist without his gentleman's personal gentleman.
- Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee. Thought it appropriate to put these two together. Sam's loyalty is amazing as is Frodo's power of endurance

Asking yourself questions about your characters is a great way to find out if you've fleshed out your creations enough. You can ask yourself about their tastes in music, what they would read, their favourite foods and so on. I love doing this. And the exercise really does make you think more deeply about your "people".
Also tastes can and do change over time so do your characters do this? What did they like once but don't now? What put them off this? What do your characters need as skills to be able to survive in the world you've created for them? What happens to those who, for whatever reason, cannot develop those skills? Are they a kind of underclass or put to death? Do tastes depend on someone's class or are there groups of differing backgrounds who like the same thing? Have fun finding out! |
