I must admit I always "hear" my charaters speak before I can visualize them. I suppose this is because I am looking for the dominant trait in a character and hearing their voice tends to confirm what those traits are. It is then a case of staying true to my inner vision.
My monthly Association of Christian Writers' post this time is called Simple Visual Aids and looks at how a simple piece of cloth draped over the cross in a church really brings home the meaning of Easter to me. But it isn't just material things which can do that. Words, carefully chosen and placed, conjure up the images we want our readers to have. We are trying to convey the inner vision of what we see when we invent our characters and the worlds they inhabit.
