- Always edit on paper, not on screen.
- Have a gap between having written the piece and then editing it. This one helps you see the piece as a reader would, which is iinvaluable. The gap gives you some distance from the work.
- Treat writing the piece and editing it as two separate tasks. Create first, have fun, edit later. It's easier and you then get to edit the piece as a whole item. I don't see how you can really edit a piece until you have written it in full.
- Read widely, including non-fiction. I find ideas for stories come from things I've read so the wider the reading pool, the more choices you have!
- Always check out competitions, agents, publishers etc and find out that they are what they claim to be. If in doubt, always as organisations such as the Society of Authors.
